Rusty Myers' Tip # 2

Nothing is worse than having a big moose come in and then you can’t get the shot at it or of it because you are in the wrong position. There are quite a number of factors you need to consider before setting up for the call.
Which direction is the moose most likely to come from? I like to set up alongside a lake, river or other natural break so that I can reduce the number of ways that the moose can approach. This way I know that he has to walk across a particular opening where I can get the necessary shot.
Use natural cover whenever possible - I love those big old spruce with branches that drop right to the ground. Often you can get into these and carve out a very comfortable blind. The spruce branches also help cover your scent, especially if you have crushed the needles at all in your working on the blind
Avoid setting up where you will be skylined. Although having the high ground often gives you the edge for seeing in all directions, being on the very top of a rise makes you very easy to see from all approaches. I choose ahigh spot but then drop down a little to get my silhouette off of the skyline.
Choose a setup in which you will be comfortable – you could be here all day so you better have room to stretch and get at your equipment without making a lot of noise.
